Frankly, meeting and falling in love with a friend-of-a-friend was very intense for me. I seriously doubted anyone had ever been in love as much as we were. But lo and behold, that intensity was nothing compared to the intensity of carrying and getting to know my two daughters, now five and seven years old.
The intensity has subsided into a steady warm glow with fleeting memories of the early years - which is why I photograph families. When I photograph engaged couples and new parents, I am a time-traveler revisiting those wonderful times.
As far as photography, I've come full circle. After graduating from The Kansas City Art Institute nearly twenty years ago, I worked for many commercial photographers, including Hallmark Cards, as an assistant, photo-stylist and studio manager. That work lead me to the local newspaper where I worked as a graphic designer until I followed my dream of owning and operating a coffee shop, Magazines and Coffee, in The Crossroads of Kansas City, Missouri.
After the shop closed, I found myself picking up the camera again to photograph my friends and family in meaningful ways. It was like being reunited with "the one that got away" and it was very exciting. So now, I am using my 20 years of experience in creative fields, plus my entrepreneurial know-how to come full circle - back to my first love, photography.
